    Air Conditioning Not Cooling

Air conditioning that is not cooling may have incorrect settings, restricted airflow, a dirty outdoor coil, a fan or control fault, or refrigerant loss; the symptom alone does not prove it needs more gas.

    Recognise the symptom safely

Check cooling mode, a suitable set point and whether accessible filters are dirty. Look for outdoor airflow obstruction without opening covers. Allow for normal start delays and avoid changing settings repeatedly. If ice, trips, burning smells or water near electrics appear, stop the system safely.

    Causes and diagnosis

Compare return and supply temperatures in context with airflow and load. Check whether all multi-split zones or only one unit are affected, then assess compressor demand, outdoor fan operation, sensors and refrigerant circuit readings. Low charge requires a leak investigation.

Splits, multi-splits and shared VRF/VRV circuits behave differently. Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric, Toshiba, Fujitsu, Panasonic, Samsung and LG model instructions control the diagnostic method; fault descriptions here are not manufacturer-specific code tables.

    Repair options and compatible components

The solution follows the confirmed cause: cleaning, drainage repair, correcting a connection, replacing a matched sensor, pump, motor or board, or carrying out properly scoped refrigerant work. Send both indoor and outdoor references because parts can differ between generations with similar names.

A repair quote should separate diagnosis, labour, components and any circuit work. If major parts are obsolete or several defects exist, compare continued repair with replacement using the actual site conditions rather than an invented payback claim.

    Post-work testing

Run the unit with the settings and load relevant to the original complaint. Check stable operation, airflow, drainage and recurrence of alarms. Where a refrigerant circuit was opened, pressure testing, evacuation and correct charge verification are required as applicable. Record outstanding defects rather than declaring a fault cleared after only one restart.

    Cost factors and booking

All work is quoted on request. The scope depends on the equipment, fault, access, labour, parts and any refrigerant work. Diagnostic findings and the proposed repair should be agreed before additional work proceeds; a service visit is not a promise that every repair or replacement part is included.

Our central operation covers London and the South East/M25. For other UK regions, send the site postcode so coverage, equipment suitability and appointment availability can be confirmed before a visit is agreed.

Use the ServiceM8 booking form for an engineer or quotation with the site postcode, indoor and outdoor model references, fault description, controller code and access requirements. Select the requested urgency; emergency or within-48-hour selections are requests, not guaranteed attendance times. Refrigerant and electrical work require appropriately qualified personnel.

Why compressor operation does not prove cooling capacity

Cooling is the combined result of refrigerant flow, heat exchange and air movement. A dirty evaporator or fan wheel can deliver little room capacity despite a cold coil. High solar gain, open doors or an altered room layout can exceed the installed load allowance without a hardware breakdown. Verify cooling mode, set point and any central override, then compare return and supply air together with fan speed and room humidity. A single unusually cold outlet is not proof that the system is correctly charged.

On inverter units, compressor speed and the electronic expansion valve vary with demand. Low charge, a valve that does not track correctly, a faulty pipe sensor or outdoor heat-exchanger restriction can all reduce performance. A multi-split may have a mode conflict or total demand beyond its available shared capacity. VRF faults can involve a branch controller or communication bus, so note whether all rooms, one circuit or only one indoor unit is affected.

    Targeted diagnosis and repair choices

Inspect airflow and heat rejection before invasive circuit checks. Compare sensor readings with actual temperatures, examine controller commands and review inverter protection history. Refrigerant pressures should be interpreted with refrigerant type, load, outdoor conditions and the manufacturer procedure. Loss needs leak investigation, not an unmeasured top-up. Pressure testing, evacuation and correct charging are part of an appropriately scoped circuit repair, not homeowner checks.

Cleaning may be sufficient when restriction is confirmed; other findings may call for a matched thermistor, fan motor, EEV, board or compressor. Daikin VRV, Toshiba SHRM and Mitsubishi Electric City Multi are not diagnosed as identical to a residential Panasonic Etherea or Samsung WindFree split. Parts compatibility depends on full indoor/outdoor models and revisions. If a drive board has failed, rule out connected motor damage and supply problems before replacing the electronics.

Proving restored cooling and explaining cost factors

After work, run representative rooms at a stable cooling demand. Record airflow settings, temperature split, ambient conditions and relevant circuit readings rather than promising one universal target. Verify condensate disposal and ensure an iced coil has thawed before judging normal performance. Check that alarms do not recur and restore approved controls. Refrigerant interventions require documented quantities, leak findings and applicable F-Gas records; outstanding load or distribution problems should remain visible in the report.

Quotes depend on access, the number of connected units, time required to reproduce the fault, replacement-part availability and any refrigerant loss. Correcting a dirty filter has a different scope from tracing a hidden leak or changing a compressor. If equipment is unsuitable for the present load, replacement can be compared with repair using actual site requirements. Send model references, affected rooms and postcode through ServiceM8; do not assume a requested urgent visit is guaranteed.

    Frequently asked questions

    Can I check anything safely?

Check cooling mode, a suitable set point and accessible filters according to the user instructions. Do not open electrical covers or handle refrigerant.

Why is the air cold but the room stays warm?

Low air volume, high room load or poor distribution can limit useful cooling even with a cold coil.

Why is only one multi-split room affected?

Local airflow, sensors, controls, an EEV or mode restrictions may be involved. The shared outdoor unit is not automatically defective.

    Will adding refrigerant solve it?

Only if a confirmed refrigerant defect is properly addressed. Sealed systems do not require routine top-ups.

How do you verify the result?

Use representative cooling demand, airflow, temperatures, appropriate circuit data, drainage and alarm checks, recording any limitations.

    How is diagnosis booked?

Use ServiceM8 with model plates, symptoms, controller code, affected rooms, postcode and access details for a quote and confirmed appointment.
